About the Artist

Naseema Barday

I am a full-time general practitioner at Kenilworth Medicross, where I have worked for 20 years and currently hold role of managing practitioner. I qualified in 1994 at University of Cape Town, and attended Herschel Girls School. I have post grad qualifications in Infectious Diseases and Reproductive Medicine.

I am mother of four, and grandmother of one. As my children have grown and variously started leaving home, I found capacity to more seriously pick up doing painting after a long hiatus. I have to a make conscious effort to paint afterhours because time for me is a premium, but have nonetheless found the mindfulness of painting to be the perfect counterfoil to my stressful work, such that I get lost in my colours and brushes during the creative process.

I now also identify myself an artist. My preferred medium of painting is watercolour. It represents the culmination of several loves: my oldest artistic passion of drawing, my attraction to colour and how we see the world through light, my appreciation of nature and creation. Perhaps most of all, it is an expression of my love of travel with its exposure to different cultures. Most of my paintings are inextricably linked to memories and thought and feelings and, despite their ostensibly obvious subject nature, it is as though a bit of my soul resides in each to an extent.

In my youth, I chose the fork in the road of studying medicine over art, which is a choice a have never regretted, but always kept in my mind that I could one day pick up doing art again which I have once again these last few years.

My analytical thinking and attention to detail have bred a realist style of painting, but also resulted in my being critical of my own work – a characteristic that I hope will strengthen my abilities over the journey of forever learning.

I have not as yet held an exhibition of my own, but my work has been exhibited for the last 5 years at annual Fabriano Art Festival in Italy, as part of the selected Southern African group of watercolourists.
